58. the man whose head expanded

“I admit it. I never really gave Fall main man Mark E. Smith his proper due back in the day. But I had my reasons, mainly connected with the cult that seemed to spread up around him, which got particularly annoying as the 1980s dragged along (certainly in my narrow version of what passed for reality at the time). But that was then. Now there’s no arguing the guy had something genuinely fresh and cool mixed in with all the bile he was spewing. And to my ears, he never spewed it so well as The Man Whose Head Expanded, an assault rifle of a single that crossed my path in 1983 or thereabouts. Did I actually buy it? Or did Martin Q force it on me after one too many arguments, late night and accelerated, our heads definitely well expanded. Either way, tip of the hat to Martin for forcing the point, and to Mr. Smith just for being who he was-is-shall-always-be, good bad and ugly, because he will never die, I’m pretty sure, not with all those f***ing records kicking around.” (Philip Random)

007. The Final Countdown*

Installment #7 of The Final Countdown aired Saturday-April-28-2018 (c/o CiTR.FM.101.9).

Tracks available on this Youtube playlist (somewhat incomplete).

The Final Countdown* is Randophonic’s longest, most random and (if we’re doing it right) relevant countdown yet – the end of result of a long and convoluted process that finally evolved into something halfway tangible in early 2018. The 1297 Greatest Records of All Time right now right here, if that makes sense. And even if it doesn’t, we’re doing it anyway for as long as it takes, and it will take a while.

1104. paint work

The unfriendly passion of Fall main man Mark E. Smith finds weird perfection in a six and half minute riff that seems to have something to do with painting. The work of it. Shit happens, friends disappear, strangers interrupt, war is declared. You got to f*** it all off, keep at your work, else nothing ever gets finished. Which is rather how Paint Work sounds. Unfinished, yet nicely so.
